3 teenagers killed in head-on collision in northern Australia

SYDNEY, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Three teenagers have been killed in a head-on collision between two vehicles in northern Australia.

Police in Australia's state of Queensland said in a statement on Saturday that emergency services were called to the crash on a highway in the city of Mackay, over 800 km northwest of Brisbane, shortly after 10:40 p.m. local time on Friday.

Initial police investigations indicate that a sedan was attempting to overtake a semi-trailer when it collided head-on with a pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction.

The three occupants of the sedan, two males and a female, all aged 19, died at the scene.

The driver of the pickup truck, a 29-year-old male, was taken to the hospital in a serious condition. The 68-year-old driver of the semi-trailer and two occupants of a fourth vehicle that veered off the road to avoid the crash were uninjured.

Police are undertaking an investigation into the accident.
