Australian PM calls for Israel, Palestine living side by side in peace, security

SYDNEY, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a media statement on Tuesday that Australia must do everything in its power to make Israel and Palestine co-exist in peace and security.

Australia has consistently been part of the international pressure for a ceasefire in Gaza, the return of hostages, for aid to flow and for a two-state solution, he said.

"It is our duty to do everything in our power to see a just and lasting peace in the Middle East. The State of Israel and the State of Palestine living side by side, within internationally recognized borders, in peace and security," said Albanese.

Albanese and Penny Wong, Australia's minister for foreign affairs, announced from New York last month that Australia has formally recognized the independent and sovereign State of Palestine.
